But competitively, their true foils are actually big-box stores including Costco, online retailers like Amazon, and large brick-and-mortar retailers like Walmart and Target. Local consumers flock to these corporate competitors because of low prices and the large selection of products available—sometimes at the expense of local businesses.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Street businesses, according to the </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kauffman Index definition</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are local, established businesses more than five years old with fewer than fifty employees.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[1]</sup></a> These businesses are at the heart of many communities, and with the rise of mega-retailers, many towns have organized to back their local stores. With “buy local” or “local first” campaigns, towns like Tucson, Arizona </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> residents to keep locally owned and independent businesses thriving at the expense of deals at larger retailers.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[2]</sup></a> </span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the following statistics make clear, Main Street businesses provide a slew of community benefits. They generate greater investment back into their local area, higher commitment from their workers, and much more. As a consumer in your own community, here’s what you should know about local businesses.</span></p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34479\" src=\"https://assets-blog.fundera.com/assets/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/28151730/local-business-stats.jpg\" alt=\"local-business-stats\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" /></p>\n<h3><strong>1. Lots of Americans depend on their own Main Street businesses for their own—and their family’s—livelihood.  </strong></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7.8% of 18-to-64-year-olds are</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently owner-managers of an established business</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that pays them a salary, wage, or other payment.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[3]</sup></a> It’s a tough job, but roughly 15,621,419 Americans are still willing to take on the challenge to build something valuable.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>2. Shopping at a local business is better for the environment than patronizing a big-box store.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">59.3% of local, independent makers say they occasionally or usually </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use recycled materials</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 7% say they always use these materials.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[4]</sup></a><br />\n</span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of pollution in the US is caused by industrial sources. By purchasing what you need locally, you can reduce processing and packaging, and the generation of transportation waste.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>3. More money stays in your community when you shop local.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$68 for every $100 stays in the community when </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spent at a local business</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[5]</sup></a> When spending the same at a non-local business like a national chain, only $43 stays in your community.</span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wages, local taxes, and donations stay in the local economy with both types of businesses. Local economies do miss out on the purchasing of local services like accounting or marketing services and the purchasing of local supplies with non-local businesses.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>4. More than a quarter of small business owners are immigrants.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28% of main street business owners </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are immigrants</span>—a disproportionally high number when you look at both entrepreneurs and workers in general.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[6]</sup></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immigrants only make up 16% of the labor force and 18% of overall business ownership.</span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">53% of grocery stores, 45% of nail salons, 43% of liquor stores, 38% of restaurants, and 32% of both jewelry and clothing stores are owned by immigrants.</span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">48% of overall growth of US business ownership in 2000-2013 was attributed to immigrant business owners.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34480\" src=\"https://assets-blog.fundera.com/assets/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/28153804/local-main-street-business.jpg\" alt=\"local-main-street-business\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" /></p>\n<h3><strong>5. Low sales or limited cash flow is the main reason that local firms close</strong>.</h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25% of business owners said their primary reason for </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">closing their firm</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was low sales or <a href=\"https://www.fundera.com/blog/cash-flow-positive\">cash flow</a>.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[7]</sup></a></span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21.9% of respondents reported that retirement was a close second, followed by “sold the firm” at 20.3%.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>6. Americans still spend more in-store.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65% of Americans’ shopping budgets are </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still spent in-store</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[8]</sup></a></span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary reasons that consumers still hesitate to shop online are shipping costs, the inability to try the product in advance of the purchase, difficult return processes, and concerns about privacy.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>7. Online search and reviews are critical for local business success.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">97% of consumers </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">searched online for a local business </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and 73% of searchers trust a local business more because of positive reviews.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[9]</sup></a></span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">68% of consumers left a local business review when asked. If you&#8217;re a loyal customer, this is a great way to support your favorite local business. And if you’re a local business owner, don’t be afraid to ask for an honest review—your consumers will likely do it!</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>8. Many local businesses have a Facebook page but few use Facebook ads.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65 million local businesses </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a Facebook page</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but only 4 million are taking advantage of Facebook advertising products.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[10]</sup></a></span></span></li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Far fewer have set up Instagram Business profiles: Only 5 million profiles have been created, and only 500,000 have set up ad campaigns.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><b>9. The top reason shoppers choose local stores are unique product selection.</b></h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoppers provided the following reasons when asked why they </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prefer small and local retailers</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<a href=\"#sources\"><sup>[11]</sup></a> They were allowed multiple answers:</span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>61%</strong> &#8211; They offer a unique product</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>49%</strong> &#8211; I couldn’t find what I needed from traditional sources</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>40%</strong> &#8211; I want to support the community or small businesses </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>29%</strong> &#8211; I like to try new retailers</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>26%</strong> &#8211; They feature a broader assortment</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>24%</strong> &#8211; They provide an innovative shopping experience</span></span></li>\n</ul>\n</li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By providing unique products or services, Main Street business can set themselves apart from larger competition, as shown by the top two shares of respondents.<br />\n</span></li>\n</ul>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34481\" src=\"https://assets-blog.fundera.com/assets/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/28154810/local-business-cookies.jpg\" alt=\"local business stats\" width=\"1000\" height=\"602\" /></p>\n<h3><b>10.
